Pope accepts the resignation of Canberra's Archbishop Carroll
Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Francis Carroll of Canberra and Goulburn, who has also been President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.
The Canberra Times reported yesterday that Archbishop Carroll submitted his resignation, as required by church law, on his 75th birthday. He turned 75 last Friday, and will continue as Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn until his replacement has been appointed. This is likely to take several months.
Meanwhile, the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Ambrose de Paoli, will undertake broad consultation as part of the confidential process of naming the successor.
This will be the first replacement of an Australian bishop or archbishop under Pope Benedict XVI.
Archbishop Carroll, who is president of the Australian Bishops Conference, was ordained as a priest on July 27, 1954. After four years in Griffith, NSW, and three in Albury, he went to Rome where he studied canon law. From 1965, he served as the bishop's secretary and director of education in the Diocese of Wagga Wagga. He was consecrated bishop of that diocese on September 5, 1967. In 1983 he was appointed Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn.
Last year he described the need to combine numerous parishes in the archdiocese, particularly in Canberra, as disappointing but not demoralising. "It has been demanding and at times disappointing to see the decline. I am sure there is a solution but it will be found in God's time."
