Higher calling for rural counselling pioneer
Following 17 years of service to the local community as Founding Director of Centacare Bathurst (NSW), Sr Mary Comer will today be farewelled by colleagues before she leaves to take up her new post as Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph Perthville (Black Josephites).
Sr Comer has been instrumental in promoting the need for professional family services for rural and remote Australia to Catholic Welfare Australia and to Governments at all levels and over many years. She gave the first paper on Rural and Remote Counselling Services to the Catholic Welfare Australia Network in 1991 and hosted, in Bathurst, the first National Rural and Remote Centacare Conference in 1994.
More recently, she commissioned and assisted in the production of a documentary on the human cost of the drought, which is soon to be screened on national television. Still pursuing her devotion to the needs of rural families Mary will present a paper on "Best Practice in the Bush" at the Family Services Australia National Conference in Adelaide later this year.
Sr Comer’s Catholic Welfare colleagues from across NSW and the ACT will be coming to Bathurst to celebrate her achievements as Director of Centacare Bathurst and her contributions to Catholic Welfare Australia (NSW/ACT).
“We will miss Mary’s wonderfully dry sense of humour, her dogged determination, her concise analytical mind and her absolute commitment to Catholic Social Teaching," said Mrs Mary-Helen Martens, Chairperson of Catholic Welfare Australia (NCW/ACT). "The marginalised, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged in the Bathurst Diocese know only too well Sr Mary’s dedication and the incredible contribution she has made to the provision of counselling and support services in the region. Sr Mary leaves an incredible legacy”.
