Bunbury survey finds support for new cathedral
A survey of hundreds of people in the diocese of Bunbury has revealed most want a new cathedral to be built on the same site as the previous building, and they would prefer a traditional exterior and modern interior.
The ABC reports that the 84-year-old St Patrick's cathedral was demolished earlier this year after it was severely damaged during the tornado in May.
Bishop Gerard Holohan said he has been flooded with expressions of interest from architects from across Australia.
He added that there is still a lot of work to be done before a design can go ahead.
"The next thing to be done is the site master plan. That includes a geo-physical study," he said. "The sand has been moving, so it's a question of whether there's a solid enough foundation.
"We have to have some public meetings with parishioners to get some more information before we get the architect, for example, what values they want expressed in the cathedral."
