OPINION
Beyond knowledge to wisdom
I believe this is one of the crisis points for contemporary Christianity. Put bluntly, its representatives do not seem wise. Yes, those representatives can give you any amount of information, some of them can even speak knowledgeably of Christian teachings. Wisdom is another thing altogether. - Fr Michael Whelan [More] - Aquinas Academy

Catholic Welfare awards Edmund Rice lobbyist

Catholic Welfare Australia has named Phil Glendenning, of the Edmund Rice Centre for Justice and Community Education in Sydney, the winner of its Perkins Award for Excellence in Service.

CLICK HEREGlendenning is the recipient of this year's Award based on his work for more than 15 years in the area of justice for and service of those on the margins and for those who have specific needs because of poverty, injustice or lack of education.

The media release said he evokes a "deep consiousness of the needs of different groups in Australia as well as those overseas and he has worked passionately and effectively in a number of spheres".

The work he coordinated with fellow Edmund Rice Centre researchers, in collaboration with the Australian Catholic University, has led to increased criticism and scrutiny of Australia's practices of returning asylum seekers to their alleged homelands.

"He has been particularly involved and fearless in his exposition of the injustices in respect to Indigenous Australians and Refugees and Asylum Seekers. He lives a life committed to the principles of human dignity and social justice."

The Award was accepted on Phil's behalf by Dr Peter Casey, Principal, St Patrick's College, Ballarat.

Other awards announced in Friday's media release include:

AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE (ORGANISATIONAL)
Heritage and Information Service
MacKillop Family Service

AWARD FOR MOST INNOVATIVE PROGRAM – THE NORMA PARKER AWARD
The Bilby Bus – Centacare Catholic Family Services (Adelaide)
