Catholic Health applauds PM's bid for non-Govt role in mental health
Catholic Health Australia (CHA) has supported last week's interventions by Prime Minister John Howard that called for more collaboration between Government and non-Government organisations, to improve the delivery of mental health services.
"[Thursday's] intervention by the Prime Minister calling for collaboration, not buck passing of responsibilities over the state of mental health provides an important opportunity to harness the expertise and experience of the non government organisations facing the challenges of daily service delivery," said CHA CEO Francis Sullivan.
"Until the Prime Minister intervened, the predictable blame game was mounting between levels of government almost as a tactic of distraction then as a genuine response to heartfelt community concern."
"Yet on an individual level all health and community services ministers register the need to do more."
"it is absolutely vital that the Prime Minister cast his net widely for the most comprehensive advice over the real challenges facing people with mental illness and those organizations dedicated to providing essential care services."
"The Catholic health and community care sector already provides a substantial component of Australia's mental health care and is more than willing to do more."
"We are offering to make the expertise of our sector available to any deliberations at the governance level that are aimed at finding genuine solutions and to implementing a comprehensive and effective national plan".
"From our perspective Australia is facing a moral challenge to improve the dignity and support for people with mental illness and it requires strong community leadership."
