Death of Brother Colin Smith
There have been many tributes to liturgist and composer Br Colin Smith of St Mary's Province, one of Australia's best known Christian Brothers, who died on Sunday aged 77.
Edmund Rice Online reports that Br Smith made a "huge contribution to liturgical music in Australia".
His Mass Shalom and psalm collections have become a staple of liturgical life in Australia, along with his collection Sing to the Lord, hymns from which are contained in the widely-distributed hymnal As One Voice.
Br Smith was a popular liturgical workshop presenter, and coordinated the music for the three papal visits to Australia, as well as taking his choir to Rome in 1996 to sing for the beatification of Blessed Edmund Rice.
Yesterday, ABC Radio National's Religion Report included a tribute to Br Smith. Presenter David Rutledge said that he cut his liturgical teeth as a choir boy in St Mary's Cathedral, Perth, and one of his first major projects was Sydney's Eucharistic Procession of 1953. He taught music to thousands of school children, and also contributed to ABC Radio sacred music programs.
Following his death, Br Smith's Provincial Leader Br Laurie Needham wrote of the "wonderful period of liturgical study in Rome when he fell more deeply in love with the liturgy and began a love affair with Rome herself that called him back there for further years of teaching in the school that 'Europeanised' Colin himself profoundly".
"The beatification of the Founder was a special time for Col and certainly he contributed significantly to the splendour of the celebrations. While there might have been all sorts of possibilities in foreign parts, Col was happy to be back in Sydney, contributing in myriad ways to the promotion here of church music and liturgical education. Papal visits and our own Founder's annual celebrations were occasions that left us asking, 'What more is possible with music?'
"And through it all, he was Christian Brother par excellence and it gives me a buzz still to think and to say, 'He's one of ours!'"
Evening prayer for the Brothers is planned for Friday at Charingfield and funeral at St Mary's Concord on Saturday 9.30 a.m.
