Large crowd hears pope meditation on peace in Jerusalem
Speaking to another unusually large crowd at his weekly public audience yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI offered a prayer for peace in Jerusalem. 
Catholic World News reports that for the second consecutive week, the crowd that gathered in St. Peter's Square to hear the Pope's remarks was estimated at 50,000. Last week, Vatican officials said that the crowd was the largest ever for a papal audience; today's crowd was comparable in size.
The Holy Father offered the audience a meditation on Psalm 121, and repeated its exhortation: "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!"
In the psalm, the Pope said, Jerusalem is portrayed as the political capital of Israel, to which petitions are addressed and where controversies are resolved. When the psalmist speaks of "peace" in Jerusalem, he is invoking the Jewish conception of shalom - which, the Pope explained, "alludes to the Messianic peace that contains within itself joy, prosperity, goodness, and abundance."
To this day, the Holy Father continued, Jerusalem should be the place where brothers come together in unity. He quoted the words of St. Gregory the Great, who said that the "new Jerusalem" is built in the Church, made of living stones, with each stone supporting others - and with the entire structure based on the foundation of Jesus Christ.
