'Preferred partnership' between new nursing school and Sydney hospitals


Sydney's newest university, Notre Dame, and St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney have entered into a formal partnership to offer a joint nursing degree from 2006.

Notre Dame's Executive Director, Peter Glasson, said that in its first year the jointly badged Notre Dame - St Vincent's degree will offer 30 undergraduate positions, which is half the total number of nursing positions offered in the University's foundation year.

"We are delighted to join with one of the state's major health care players, whose facilities at Darlinghurst, North Sydney and Auburn are highly respected. Our values are closely aligned to the mission of St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney (SV&MHS)," said Mr Glasson.

Mary Foley, Chief Executive Officer of SV&MHS, says that the agreement marks Notre Dame becoming a preferred partner of St Vincents & Mater Heath Sydney.

"SV&MHS facilities have existing relationships with large, nationally respected, universities and SV&MHS is committed to maintaining these partnerships.

"We are looking forward to the new course starting in February 2006, and from May 2007, Notre Dame will be physically housed in their own purpose built university facility at Darlinghurst, which will make our course even more attractive to nurses as well as creating synergies that enhance St Vincents & Mater Heath Sydney," Ms Foley said.

Dr Margot Kearns, a respected health sciences academic, and the Foundation Dean of Notre Dame's College of Nursing in Sydney says the nursing degree is in the final stages of development and will shortly be submitted to the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW for accreditation.

"A Nursing External Advisory Committee, including representatives from St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney, has been very helpful in developing the course.

"Notre Dame's nursing courses in Fremantle and Broome are held in very high regard by both graduates and the health care sector, and I am confident we can replicate this success with a dynamic course in Sydney," Dr Kearns said.
