Synod told of Eucharist as 'pulsating heart' of Timor mission


As one of the auditors at the Synod in Rome, Sr Rita Burley has told the assembled bishops that the people of Bazertete, East Timor, "live the painful consequences of war" sustained by the Eucharist.

CLICK HERESr Burley, Superior General of the Handmaidens of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the UK, spoke late last week on the link between the Eucharist and mission in developing countries.

"There is no true celebration or adoration of the Eucharist that does not lead to mission," she said. "Our desire is to be women and communities of compassion and communion, at the service of true life . ... We do this in many ways depending on local need and culture; the Eucharist is always the pulsating heart of our mission."

She said that he sisters working in East Timor "offer the healing presence of Eucharistic adoration, support humanitarian and educational projects and spend themselves listening to the pain and accompanying the people along the arduous road to peace and reconciliation".

Sr Burley was one of a number of auditors, or guest participants. Others included Leonardo Casco, President Of The "Alianza Para La Familia," Honduras, Br. Marc Hayet, General Director Of The Little Brothers Of Jesus, France, And Andrea Riccardi, Founder Of The Sant'egidio Community, Italy.

Representing interfaith dialogue was Alexei V. Judin, Professor of Church History and Inter-Faith Dialogue in thee Russian Federation, Russian State University for the Humanities, St. Thomas College, Moscow, Russia. Bishop Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun S.D.B. Of Hong Kong was there to speak on the Church in China.
