OPINION
Beyond knowledge to wisdom
I believe this is one of the crisis points for contemporary Christianity. Put bluntly, its representatives do not seem wise. Yes, those representatives can give you any amount of information, some of them can even speak knowledgeably of Christian teachings. Wisdom is another thing altogether. - Fr Michael Whelan [More] - Aquinas Academy

Catholic Mission accepting donations for Pakistan earthquake victims

Catholic Mission is now accepting donations from the public to help victims of this month's earthquake in Pakistan, which has claimed the lives of over 40,000 people and left millions homeless.

CLICK HERECatholic Mission (through Rome) has given a gift of $A133,049 to the Pakistani National Director of Pontifical Missionary Societies (Catholic Mission) Fr Mario Rodrigues, to help with disaster relief.

Fr Rodrigues has visited the affected areas to review the situation and organise relief efforts.

"There are hundreds of villages and small towns in the vast mountainous area that have been affected by the earthquake," said Fr Rodrigues.

"Although the roads to the main towns have been cleared, the remote villages can only be reached by helicopter," he said. "Every five or ten minutes a helicopter is arriving in Islamabad with injured people. The hospitals in the city are full. This morning I visited two of the largest hospitals, the sight was awful."

Fr Rodrigues is concerned about the millions of homeless people in the area and their long-term future.

"As the winter season begins to set in in the mountains, the immediate need is for tents, blankets and warm clothing," said Fr Rodrigues.

Pakistan's Catholic population is less than 1%, and there were very few Catholics in the earthquake zone.

"Fortunately only a very few Christians have been affected (five were killed in an apartment block collapse in Islamabad)," said Fr Rodrigues. "We are joining our Muslim brothers and sisters throughout the country to reach out to those in distress and need. We have to reach out in love and solidarity and give witness that ours is a God of love who cares for us in spite of all the tragedies and crosses we experience in our lives."

Catholic Mission has an ongoing commitment to Pakistan through their work in Partnering Local Churches and Communities, Fostering Local Church Leadership and their work for Children, with over $1 million committed each year.
