Catholic Welfare Australia becomes Catholic Social Services Australia
The delivery of Catholic social services in Australia was united yesterday under a new banner reminiscent of the Southern Cross at the launch of Catholic Social Services in Canberra.
Catholic Social Services Australia (CSSA) Executive Director, Frank Quinlan, said Catholic Welfare Australia has undergone substantial change over recent years and the name change reflects the new identity.
"The new logo, the stylised Southern Cross, comprises many parts drawn together and united. This is symbolic of Catholic Social Services' role in network and sector development," he said.
"Roughly 50 per cent of our membership is drawn from outside the Centacare network. While still serving its Centacare members, Catholic Social Services Australia serves a broader network which includes both religious and lay organisations working in the social services sector."
He said although the new identity has changed, the fundamental objectives of the organisation remain the same: to promote and coordinate Catholic involvement in the social services sector and to be "a prophetic voice for those people who are excluded from participation in society".
"We will encourage the development of the Catholic social services sector," he said. "We will provide direct assistance for the relief of poverty and develop and promote public policy that is more inclusive of people most in need."
"The Catholic social services sector in Australia is maturing. United, we have a great opportunity to shape the future and, perhaps, to hold back some of the trend towards individualism that threatens to undermine our communities," Mr Quinlan said.
