World renowned liturgist to visit Australia
A leading Catholic liturgist is to visit Australia for a series of lectures on various aspects of initiation, liturgy and catechesis.
The visit in June and July of Dr Sheila O'Dea, the Director of Liturgy and a teacher at All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland, will be hosted by Broken Bay Institute (BBI).
BBI Director, Dr Gerard Goldman said Dr O'Dea's liturgical education tour would be a valuable experience for all.
"Dr O'Dea's ability to connect liturgy and spirituality with everyday life is much needed," Dr Goldman said. "We can always strive to make better balance with being relevant to the needs of the worshipping community and in harmony with our tradition. Dr O'Dea has an outstanding reputation in straddling these two sources of tension."
BBI Liturgy Department Co-ordinator, Dr John Frauenfelder said the interest in Dr O'Dea's visit had been overwhelming.
"Her presence will rekindle the fervour and deepen the spirituality of people as she leads them further into the riches of our liturgical life," he said.
Dr O'Dea's tour will take in Ballarat, Bendigo, Canberra, Broken Bay, Adelaide, Sale, Wagga Wagga, Bathurst, Melbourne, Brisbane, Parramatta and New Zealand.
She will be the keynote speaker at the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) national conference at Baulkham Hills in Sydney's north-west in June.
The Bishop of Wagga Wagga, Gerard Hanna said Dr O'Dea would visit each of the deaneries in the diocese to speak with communities on the "Spirituality of Community".
"We pray that these gatherings will inspire people of the diocese to recognise parish life as a means of growing in the love of Jesus and of each other as members of His Church," Bishop Hanna said.
Sr Ilsa Niecenicks said a valuable aspect of Dr O'Dea's visit to South Australia was her international exposure, which has included Canada, the US and now Dublin.
"Having someone from another country and culture to address any local church brings with it a prophetic dimension, and I am confident that Dr O'Dea's visit to the people of the two South Australian dioceses, will be no exception," she said.
