The announcement, made yesterday, comes as the other two institutions, the University of Queensland and the University of Wollongong, are starting their first classes in new Western civilisation degrees funded by the centre from the estate of the late businessman Paul Ramsay.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed between the university and the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation, ACU will receive more than $50 million over eight years to fund the new degree — covering the cost of hiring new staff and offering 150 scholarships to students.
The degree, which will commence next year, will be delivered at the university’s North Sydney campus.
ACU vice-chancellor Greg Craven said the university would retain its autonomy and academic freedom under the partnership agreement.
“In our negotiations with the Ramsay Centre, we have been clear that the university will maintain autonomy over all key governance arrangements related to the course, and that all our activities will be consistent with the university’s position on intellectual and academic freedom,” Professor Craven said.
He said the centre’s support for the humanities was a very timely endorsement for the humanities in Australia “at a time when universities are de-emphasising humanities in favour of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).
“A liberal arts education is a particularly valuable type of learning, introducing students to great books and the thinking they have inspired over the centuries, and inspiring them to critique and debate the issues and ideas presented in these works and their lasting significance for the world,” Professor Craven said.
“We are delighted to be partnering with ACU,” said Simon Haines, chief executive of the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation.
“This is an extremely good fit for the Ramsay Centre which seeks to give students the opportunity to study the great texts of Western civilisation in small group settings.”
